PRESS STATEMENT
15.6.2002
INQUIRY
BY SUHAKAM ON ISA DETAINEES AT KAMUNTING ON JUNE
18, 2002
We, the solicitors for the following detainees:-
1.
Mohamad Ezam Mohd Nor
2.
Hishamuddin bin Rais
3.
Chua Tian Chang
4.
Saari bin Sungib
5.
Badrulamin bin Bahron
6.
Lokman bin Noor Adam
are instructed to express their deep
concern and disappointment with SUHAKAM for their intention to hold
an inquiry restricted solely into their conditions at the Kamunting
Detention Centre.
They
believe such a restricted inquiry will not do justice with regards
human rights violation that they have suffered and therefore cannot
be regarded as a bona fide investigation.
Our
clients have understood all along based on SUHAKAM’s own previous statements that it was
to hold a public inquiry on their detention which would certainly
include the conditions of the first 60 days of their arrest.
They
have further averred that it is unreal, artificial and in fact an
injustice for SUHAKAM not to investigate the events during the first
60 days of their incarceration.
Our
clients have therefore have instructed us to ask SUHAKAM to reconsider
its position i.e. that their inquiry is restricted to the treatment
of the detainees at the Kamunting Detention Centre and to widen
its inquiry to cover the entire detention.
Released
