1. Letter to your government

Mr. President/Prime Minister

Dear Sir,

It is the desire of every country to develop a friendly and a good relation with other countries. Our country is no exception to this. However, we do find that there are occasions where the abuse and oppression in a country is intolerable and our silence is taken to signify acquiescence.

Since September 1998, the world has seen the drastic erosion of democratic rights in Malaysia. The sacking of Anwar Ibrahim from his position as the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, his subsequent beating and kangaroo trial marks the lowest ebb in Malaysian politics. What has happened since then demonstrates to us the abuse and violation of human rights that can take place in a country where the independence and integrity of the democratic institutions is undermined. What this has created is a situation where the leader, Prime Minister, Mahathir Mohammad, is no longer accountable to anyone and act with impunity.

Malaysia may seem like a distant land and Anwar Ibrahim just one person. But we have seen how crises in the hinterland of Europe, such as in Kosova and Bosnia, can ultimately threaten regional security. Likewise, Anwar Ibrahim represents more than just himself. He represents a generation that is seeking to build a Malaysia that is more liberal, democratic, open and progressive. This is a stark contrast to the chauvinistic and narrow-minded nationalism of Mahathir.

I would like to urge that our government take a clear and firm position on the deteriorating situation in Malaysia. Let us not wait for it to become a disaster for us to act. All disasters have its origin in small abuses and violations that are ignored. I would like to suggest that our government take the following steps to check the deteriorating situation in Malaysia:

  • Put more stringent conditions on aid and loans that we may decide to give to Malaysia to ensure that such aid is not used to enrich the crony capitalist network of Mahathir.
  • Persuade the Malaysian government to bring its judiciary to international standard.
  • Persuade the Malaysian government to free Anwar Ibrahim and respect the democratic rights of its citizen.
I would also like to inform the government that a Free Anwar Campaign has been initiated by group of conscientious Malaysians. Information on this initiative can be accessed at: Thank You

His Excellency The Governor of Sarawak

Your Majesties,

May this letter reach Your Highnesses under the most pleasant of circumstances. Permit me to take a moment of your time. What is to be said in this letter is of such importance that only a person of Your Majestiesí exalted position can provide a recourse.

Malaysia is a beautiful country with a vibrant culture and friendly people. Many people have come to love it and have a high regard of it. However, lately we are distressed by the political turmoil that has enveloped the country since the sacking of Anwar Ibrahim as the deputy prime minister and his subsequent beating and mock trial. It is unfortunate that a country with so much potential is dragged down this path.

We believe Your Majesties have the foresight to see that this crisis will deteriorate if the injustices taking place in Malaysia is unchecked. Already, Malaysia today is being compared with the more oppressive regimes of the world. It is becoming internationally isolated. This is happening at a time when other countries in the region are becoming more democratic and embracing international standards on human rights.

Of particular concern to many is the unjust trial and imprisonment of Anwar Ibrahim. The Malaysian constitution provides Your Majesty with the power to pardon a person. We beg upon Your Majesties to exercise this power to remedy the injustice that has taken place. If this not done, the injustice that has taken place will only lead to more injustices. This downward spiral of event will put Malaysia in a state it does not deserve. The people of Malaysia deserve to live as free people without being shadowed by the fear that what has happened to Anwar Ibrahim can happen to them. Only Your Majesties can assure them of this. Pardon Anwar Ibrahim and let the people know that Your Majesties remains the place they can put their hope and trust.

Thank You

3. To the Prime Minister of Malaysia.

YAB Dato Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohammad
The Prime Minister of Malaysia
Pejabat Perdana Menteri
Blok Utama Bangunan Perdana Putra
Pusat Pentadbiran Kerajaan Persekutuan
62502 Putrajaya

Dear Sir,

I have always had a high regard of Malaysia and your leadership. I thought of you as someone who is capable of presenting an alternative perspective to the world. I saw in the leadership team of you and your former deputy, Anwar Ibrahim, a dynamic duo. However, my attitude has very much changed since.

The mock trial and imprisonment of Anwar Ibrahim reveals to me the other side of Dr. Mahathir. Suddenly, I realized that this Malaysian doctor also has a Mr. Hyde to him. I have begun to wonder what all of your past speeches really meant. I am beginning to wonder whether Mahathir Mohammad is in fact just another dictator. Or should I just say you are not any better than the colonial masters that you so frequently harangue.

You have so much to offer to your country and I am surprised that you have let the worse part of you prevail. It is as though instead of letting history record you as the most able leader of modern Malaysia you have chosen to be a political outcast, not just amongst your people, but also in the eyes of the international community.

Free Anwar Ibrahim and demonstrate the little magnamity you may still be able to. I assure you Malaysians for generations to come will remember you in a better light.

Thank You

You can print them directly from their webpages or download the text versions and customize as you see fit.  Don't forget to include your own address in the letter.
