UNDER THE PRESENT SYSTEM, THERE CAN BE NO CHANGE THROUGH THE GENERAL ELECTIONS

You may ask, if the people are so fed-up, why do they not reject the government through the ballot box? This is because, under the present system, Malaysian elections are not free and fair. The odds are stacked against the opposition. Please refer to the Malaysian Citizens' Elections Watch Interim Report on the 1999 Malaysian General Elections and this analysis done soon after the last General Election.And we are not even touching on the massive cheating so prevalent in Malaysian elections.

The government has massive propaganda machinery at its disposal, which includes the mainstream media, the government departments, and the Information Department. On top of that, the government only needs to win 50% of the votes to retain its two-thirds majority in Parliament. For the government to just retain a simple majority - even without a two-thirds majority it requires a mere 40% of the votes.

THE FAC'S STRUGGLE

The objective of upholding justice is instilled as the maxim of Anwar Ibrahim's struggle. The FAC vows to continue Anwar Ibrahim's struggle for peaceful change based on democratic principles. With your support the FAC will be able to realise Anwar Ibrahim's aspiration to mould a clean, just and democratic government that guarantees the peoples freedom of participation at every level.

The FAC wishes to restore the spirit and honour of the Federal Constitution that demands a nation governed by the Rule of Law, with an independent and conscientious Judiciary, providing a channel for every citizen to procure justice and to advance with greater confidence towards a civil society - empowering politics, the economy and culture.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES OF THE FAC

Anwar Ibrahim's struggle is to build a just society and a nation guided by the fundamental principles of the Federal Constitution of Malaysia. This, too, is the basis of the FACs struggle. Included in these principles are:

  • To uphold the principle of a Constitutional Monarchy and preserve the institution of the monarchy in the context of a parliamentary democracy;
  • To uphold a parliamentary democratic system by giving supremacy to the voice and power of the people;
  • To defend the Rule of Law and to ensure that this principle is not transgressed for the benefit of the leaders or certain cliques;
  • To establish a judiciary that is free and conscientious as a bastion of justice for the people;
  • To uphold basic human rights and noble values regardless of status or descent;
  • To guarantee freedom of speech, association and assembly, along with other basic human rights;
  • To abolish the Internal Security Act (ISA) and end the practice of detention without trial;
  • To establish an Independent Commission to re-examine all laws curtailing the peoples rights and to eliminate those provisions that are contrary to such rights;
  • To defend the independence of the media currently dominated by the political or business elite for its own interests or the interest of their cronies;
  • To increase the role of Non-Governmental Organisations in society and to strengthen the foundations of democracy towards building a civil society;
  • To overhaul the prison system to ensure that prisoners are treated in accordance with international conventions, and to institute special programs for juvenile offenders;
  • To distribute the nation's wealth fairly and reduce the gap between the rich and the poor.

THE FACS PLEDGE

The FAC pledges to uphold and respect the fundamental principles of the Constitution of Malaysia; namely:

  • Constitutional sovereignty;
  • Constitutional monarchy;
  • Parliamentary democracy;
  • Fundamental freedoms;
  • The rule of law;
  • Judicial independence;
  • The rights and responsibilities of citizenship.

FUNDAMENTAL VALUES OF THE FAC

Based on the desire to advance and improve peoples lives and combat injustice, the FAC is committed to the following fundamental values that underpin our mission and objectives;

  • Being responsive to the needs and welfare of the people;
  • Accountability and transparency;
  • Participatory democracy;
  • People-centered development;
  • Respecting the rights, culture and dignity of all people as enshrined in the Constitution of Malaysia, and enhancing race and gender equity;
  • Ensuring the FAC remains true to its mission and objectives;
  • Cooperation, collaboration and networking with other International Non-Governmental Agencies that share issues of mutual concern;
  • Striving for excellence, including efficient and effective service provision at all levels.

THE FAC'S STRATEGY

The main strategy of the FAC would be to plan and conduct various campaigns to explain the current situation in Malaysia, in particular with regards to the unjust trial of Anwar Ibrahim, aimed at eventually getting Anwar Ibrahim out of jail.

THE FAC'S PROGRAMMES

To meet this strategy, various programs will be implemented simultaneously, such as:

  • To compile and maintain a database of contacts from all over the world. This database would include International Non-Governmental Organisations, societies, activists, media, governments, prominent individuals, foundations, and so on.
  • To establish communications with these contacts and broadcast the existence, purpose and workings of the FAC.
  • To arrange for face-to-face meetings with these contacts to better understand what they do and explore in what way the FAC can work with them..
  • To work with Amnesty International and other International bodies in highlighting the current human rights situation in Malaysia in general and with regards to the unfair trial of Anwar Ibrahim in particular.
  • To conduct regular public relations exercises with the media, governments, individuals, and International Non-Governmental Organisations.
  • To organise International seminars and forums.
  • To get an International FreeAnwar Movement set up to network Malaysians and non-Malaysians sympathetic to the FACs cause.
These are just some of the initial programmes that will be started. The list is definitely not exhaustive and new programmes will be added as we go along, and as and when the need arises.
