AN INTRODUCTION TO THE FreeAnwar CAMPAIGN(FAC)

THE PRINCIPAL OBJECTIVE OF THE FAC

The principal objective of the FAC is to seek justice and freedom for Anwar Ibrahim and uphold Anwar Ibrahim's struggle and sacrifice to build a society and a Malaysian nation centered on justice, religious faith and noble humanitarian values.

SOME HISTORICAL BACKGROUND TO THE ANWAR IBRAHIM SAGA

  • Anwar Ibrahim Is A Victim Of A High Level Conspiracy
  • When Anwar Ibrahim was first arrested on 20 September 1998 it was under the Internal Security Act (ISA). The "crime" was organising a protest demonstration against OPPRESSION, CORRUPTION, CRONYISM and NEPOTISM - so rampant in Malaysian society today. Realising that the charge would not stick, and due to the unpopularity of the ISA even amongst the ruling elite, the "crime" was changed to sodomy.

The basis of the sodomy charge was "revelations" in a book titled "50 Reasons Why Anwar Ibrahim Should Not Be Prime Minister", which the court had earlier granted an injunction against - and which Dr Mahathir himself had publicly declared as unfounded and a pack of lies.

Anwar Ibrahim is a victim of a high-level conspiracy. Even Dr Mahathir had said so when he urged the public not to believe the allegations in the book. Anwar Ibrahim had warned Dr Mahathir of this conspiracy in two letters which he wrote to the Prime Minister.

  • Anwar Ibrahim's Two Letters to Dr Mahathir Mohammad
  • Anwar Ibrahim, in two letters to Dr Mahathir Mohamad dated 25 August 1998 and 28 August 1998, traced the conspiracy to bring him down to a poison letter circulated more than a year before that.

  • Anwar Ibrahim Is A Victim Of Police Brutality
  • While under detention, Anwar Ibrahim was beaten to near-death. Though Anwar Ibrahim was lying injured in his cell without proper medical attention, the Inspector General of Police declared to the world that Anwar Ibrahim was safe from harm.

When it became widely known Anwar Ibrahim had been seriously injured while under police custody, the Prime Minister, Dato Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad, commented that Anwar Ibrahim must have beaten himself up to make the police look bad. Later, a Royal Commission investigation discovered not only was Anwar Ibrahim beaten up, but that the deed was committed by no less than the Inspector General of Police himself the same man who had earlier denied any knowledge of the incident.

  • The First Trial
  • On 2 September, 1998 Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim, one of Malaysia's most popular political leaders, was dismissed from his position as Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister by the Prime Minister, Dato' Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad. On 3 September, 1998 Anwar was sacked as Deputy President and member of the country's ruling political party - the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO)- by the party president, Dr Mahathir.

Many people were shocked not only by Anwar's dismissal but the bizarre reasons given by Dr Mahathir for the sacking. Dr Mahathir told the whole nation in no uncertain terms that his former Deputy was "a sodomist who also indulged in illicit sex." The immediate result of the unfair dismissal was a series of unprecedented vocal public demonstrations by ordinary people in the streets. In the context of the country's young political history, seldom has this kind of anger been seen before. Police action against the peaceful demonstrators was swift and brutal. Dr Mahathir continued to utter a continuous tirade of scandalous and libellous remarks against Anwar through manipulation of the mainstream media, the party machinery and certain state agencies.

On 20 September, 1998 Anwar was detained under the notorious Internal Security Act, a law that provides for detention without trial. On 29 September, 1998 Anwar faced nine charges in the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court. Another charge was preferred against Anwar in the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court. After the ten charges were read out by the Court interpreter to him, Anwar pleaded not guilty and claimed trial. It was at the Sesions Court that Anwar revealed to the world at large the 'black eye' and the shocking news that he was beaten while under police custody. It turned out later, after deliberations by a Royal Commission of Inquiry, that his assailant was none other than the national police chief!
